“When Love Stinks….”

For many, problems in relationships can evoke bitter sadness and even more-lasting problems with depression. Intimate relationships are complex. Each is different. When a relationship works it can be wonderful. It is typically inexplicable.
Probably every newspaper in America has a columnist specializing in relationship advice. Many times, part of the advice is to see a counselor.
Can mental-health professionals learn something from reading these columns? Yes: when the columns are detailed and well-written.
In the Boston Globe Meredith Goldstein writes such a column, called “Love Letters.” In each column, there is presentation of a specific and lengthy relationship problem, a full response by Ms. Goldstein, and then a respectful discussion by up to 1,000 readers.
Perhaps you will be intrigued by some of the discussions at Love Letters.
