AMHF author Joanne Gavin signs a copy of "Live Your Dreams, Change the World" for Dr. Ruth.

For three days last week American Mental Health Foundation Books shared a booth with its distributor, Lantern, at the annual BookExpo America—which is held at the Jacob Javits Center on New York City’s West Side. (New York remains the publishing capital of North America, even with the multitude of changes the industry has seen.) The thousands of square feet were every bookworm’s dream: There likely was in excess of 35,000 registered for the three days.

The foundation sponsored an authors’ signing that featured Dr. Joanne and David Gavin and their Live Your Dreams, Change the World: The Psychology of Personal Fulfillment for Women.

The authors signed thirty-five copies as Dr. Ruth Westheimer also stopped by to chat about their work and…well, her favorite topic.

AMHF Books was well located, in the 2200s; just down the aisle was the American Psychological Association exhibit. They have become one of the premiere publishers of works on psychology, having 100,000 members to offer expertise on a range of topics.

APA is launching an entire line of children’s books called Magination Press. These are books to read with, or to give to, children to read on topics that many might find hard to talk about. APA describes this new line thus:

“Written for ages 4 through 18, these books deal with topics ranging from the everyday—starting school, shyness, normal fears, and a new baby in the house—to more serious problems, such as divorce, attention deficit disorder, depression, serious injury or illness, autism, trauma, death, and much more.

“Most of our books are written by mental-health professionals or those who work closely with them and with children. Our books help children understand their feelings, provide information about the topic or situation, and offer extensive practical coping strategies. A comprehensive Note to Parents is usually included to help guide parents, therapists, social workers, and teachers in using the book.

“Magination Books are not preachy or didactic: They feature sensitive, lively, sometimes humorous writing, along with exquisite, evocative illustrations. They are a pleasure to look at and to read.”

This series will be a great asset to parents, teachers, and therapists.
