Follow-up Study by AMHF January 1949 to December 1959

Under the direction of Dr. Stefan de Schill, covering the period January 1, 1949, to December 31, 1959, a research study was conducted regarding some 18,000 patients. This was a follow-up study of individuals not accepted for treatment by the Psychoanalytic Center, Inc., the then-clinical arm of AMHF.

The subjects either appeared personally, or applied by telephone or letter. Six months later, they were contacted by AMHF for the purposes of this unique study.

Persons applying for low-cost, outpatient treatment: 8,950 men / 9,292 women.

Persons seen for a full-length orientation session: 2,389 men / 3,158 women.

Persons reached directly by telephone for follow-up study: 3,351 men / 5,578 women.

Number of cases in which follow-up information would have to be obtained indirectly via relatives, friends, and so forth: 1,680 men / 1,742 women.

The total of the last two items: 5,031 men / 7,320 women.

Information obtained after the six-month period:

Suicide or attempted: 106 men / 144 women. (250 total)

Unable to work or to hold employment: 1,467 men / 2,426 women. (3,893)

Arrests or prison sentences: 129 men / 47 women. (176)

Committed to mental institutions: 568 men / 624 women. (1,192)

Persons having obtained some kind of outpatient treatment at a clinic or with a practitioner: 69 men / 92 women. (161)

From the above number, persons having obtained intensive treatment: 5 men / 13 women. (18)
